If mesothelioma is found experts may suggest the procedure of a biopsy to make an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal a small piece of tissue to be examined. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma and if it is epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide the best treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The tumors could become resistant to treatment and may recur. The specialist may recommend the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the prognosis for a patient.
