In general, you can only upgrade the equipment you have to the level of its top-level counterpart. This means that you can upgrade body armors, helms, shields and gloves to the same level as their top-of-the-line counterparts. Weapons can be upgraded up to the equivalent level of a sword. This doesn't increase the weapon's power of damage and can reduce the value of its trade.
To upgrade an item, you need to spend flightstones and crests. The amount of each is contingent on the item's level and slot. Upgrades to swords, for example will require more flightstones than an upgrade of the Cloak. You can also get discounts on the number of crests and flightstones needed to upgrade an item.
